Schick's Intuition Sensitive Care Razor Gave Me a Close Shave Without the Mess

I often have full-circle beauty moments. Being tasked with reviewing the Schick Intuition Sensitive Care Razor was one of them. I remember when the original Schick Intuition razor first came out on the market back in the early 2000s. The commercial had a girl struggling to shave with a traditional razor and cream while Jewel's "Intuition" played in the background. I was in junior high at the time and just starting to shave—my Catholic school plaid-skirt uniform made me notice my body hair early on.

Like the original model I tried almost twenty years ago, the Schick Intuition Sensitive Care Razor promises a close shave without needing to use shaving cream. The solid bar and four-blade razor claim to condition skin while minimizing irritation. I was excited to revisit an updated take on an old favorite.

About My Skin: Prone to ingrowns

Growing up as a competitive swimmer, I would often go months without shaving my legs. In a way, finally shaving at the end of the season for finals was symbolic. This practice of letting my hair go rogue carried on with me into adulthood. Unless it's summertime or I have a special occasion, I let my leg hair do its own thing. However, when I do decide to shave, it's a whole production. My body's hair texture is pretty fine. I can usually go weeks in between shaves. I also don't shave my upper thighs because you can't really see the hair. But because I'm prone to ingrown hairs, I treat my skin pre- and post-shaving to get my best results. 

To prep my skin, I wash my body with exfoliating gloves to remove dead skin cells that could potentially clog the blades. I then go in with a traditional razor, shaving each area twice to avoid missing any spots. I finish with a hydrating exfoliating scrub and a thick body cream to seal in all the moisture.

Design: Practical and time-saving

As much as I indulge in beauty rituals, I also love shortcuts and time-saving products. The Schick Intuition Sensitive Care Razor is just that. The solid soap bar head allows me to skip shaving cream and body wash while giving me a smooth shave in one swipe. It contains vitamin E and aloe to help condition skin and minimize irritation. "Vitamin E is a hydrator and a well-established antioxidant," says board-certified dermatologist Mona Gohara. "It can bring down inflammation after trauma (yes, shaving is little bits of trauma) to the skin." The aloe in the bar works similarly. "It contains a particular protein (metallothionein) that has a protective effect on the skin," Gohara says.

The handle is lightweight and features a rubber grip that doesn't get slippery even when wet. I can never remember where I put my shaving cream, so having an all-in-one product is a dream.

The Feel: Easy to use

Aside from cutting my shower time in half, the Schick Intuition Sensitive Care Razor has four different blades for a close shave with minimal irritation. "While the skin may feel smooth to the touch, at the microscopic level, it is full of hills and valleys," says New York City-based board-certified dermatologist Joshua Zeichner. "Multiple blade razors that are individually spring-mounted adjust to the contours of the skin as you shave, which ultimately minimizes skin irritation, nicks and cuts, and razor burn." 

I was surprised by how easily it glided over hard to get areas like my knees and underarms as I was using it. The pivoting head gave me a close shave without cutting me. All I need to do is add water.

The Results: Smooth and moisturized skin

After my shower, my legs and underarms felt very smooth and moisturized. I skipped my usual post-shave scrub to really test out its hydrating claims. The solid bar didn't clog the blades or get goopy—something I was worried about. I often nick myself around my knees, but that didn't happen, thanks to the pivoting head. My legs still felt smooth a couple of days later. Overall, shaving with this razor was quick, mess-free, and left my skin without any irritation.

I love it for my underarms and if I'm in a rush. However, I will stick to a traditional razor when it comes to my whole shaving routine for my legs. I find that I can miss a few spots because shaving cream acts as a marker. That being said, the solid is the true star of the show. It really delivers moisture and helps minimize any sort of irritation.

The Value: A great deal

The Schick Intuition Sensitive Care Razor retails for around $10 and comes with two heads. Because you don't need shaving cream with it, I think you're getting a great deal. Even the refills come out to about $3 a pop. You get a close inexpensive shave quickly and without the mess.

Similar Products: You've got options

Gillette Venus Comfortglide ($22): The Gillette Venus Comfortglide is another razor that features a conditioning solid. It has five blades and a metal handle that's compatible with Gillette's other razor heads. The main difference, apart from the price, is the design: the Gillette Venus Comfortglide is sleeker. However, the bar on the Schick Intuition is much larger, so it feels like it's actually washing your body while you shave. The Comfortglide's solid bar does give you a smooth shave experience, but I would not skip body wash when using it.
