Given how many different formulas I’ve tried, I can tell you that they’re not all created equal. In fact, some lip masks that claim to hydrate your lips actually feel like they create the opposite effect. But which ones do deliver on their claims? The Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask and the Lawless Forget The Filler Overnight Lip Plumping Mask are two that come to mind immediately. Not only are they some of my personal favorites, but they’re arguably two of the most popular lip masks on the market, too. While they’re both excellent choices, there are some key differences between them. So, I’m putting them head to head and sharing what you need to know about each one so that you can make your most informed purchasing decision.

Who It’s For: If you have dry lips and you’re looking for a hydrating lip mask with a rich texture and a glossy finish, you’ll love this one. It’s formulated with nourishing ingredients, like shea butter and fruit extracts, and it feels incredibly soft and moisturizing on the lips. I love that it doesn’t pill or get sticky (that’s a major pet peeve of mine), rather, it maintains its smooth texture as you wear it. When I apply a generous coat before bed, I wake up with smooth-but-not-greasy lips the next morning.

While it’s marketed as a nighttime mask, I find myself reaching for it during the day whenever I feel like my lips need a boost of moisture. In my opinion, it’s a bit too glossy to be applied underneath lipstick unless you apply a minuscule amount, but I love applying a layer on top of lip liner—the combination makes my lips look incredibly defined and glossy. And considering that it won best overall in our test of the best lip masks of 2022, I’m clearly not alone in my love for this product.

Who It’s For: If you want a product that hydrates your lips and contains plumping capabilities, this is the one for you. It’s formulated with Maxi-lip, a cosmetic ingredient that’s been proven to increase the volume of the lips by 40 percent, as well as hydrating and nourishing ingredients like hyaluronic acid and shea butter. It has a relatively thin, smooth texture that glides onto the lips with ease, and once applied, it creates a subtle cooling effect that isn’t too intense like other plumping products can be. It provides a minimally shiny finish, and I’ve noticed that it helps to subtly blur the appearance of my lip lines as I wear it.

Feel

Winner: It’s a tie.

Both of these masks feel incredibly comfortable on the lips despite their different textures, making it impossible to choose a winner as it ultimately comes down to preference. They’re both smooth and not sticky, but if you like thicker, more rich textures, you’ll prefer the Laneige option. If you prefer lightweight formulas and you enjoy a bit of a cooling sensation on the lips, I think the Lawless pick is better for you. Note that the cooling sensation only lasts a few minutes, so if you’re not keen on it, I wouldn’t say it’s a dealbreaker.

Hydration

Winner: Laneige

Both of these lip masks do a great job at hydrating the lips, but I think the Laneige Lip Sleeping mask provides a longer-lasting hydrating feel. Given how rich and emollient the texture is, I can feel it on my lips for longer than the Lawless option. When I apply the Lawless Forget The Filler mask, it tends to wear off about an hour or two later. However, don’t let this fool you into thinking that it isn’t hydrating—it is, and it does help nourish chapped lips, but I just prefer the lasting, moisturizing feel of the Laneige option.

Overall Look

Winner: It’s a tie.

Despite both working to moisturize dry lips, these two formulas look incredibly different once applied. The Laneige option creates a juicy, incredibly glossy finish that almost looks like glass on the lips. The Lawless option provides a more subtle shine, but it works to plump fine lines and create the appearance of very smooth lips. If you want to ditch your lip gloss in favor of a mask without sacrificing the finish, I say go for Laneige. But if you’re equally as concerned about lip lines as you are about hydration, the Lawless mask is a better choice for you.

Scent

Winner: Laneige

I typically avoid fragrance in skincare as it can be an irritant, but I’m not nearly as concerned about it when it comes to lip products—in fact, I really enjoy a scented lip product here and there. The Lawless formula currently comes in three scents: The original, which is like a sweet menthol, cherry vanilla, and a limited edition scent that smells like birthday cake. They’re all fantastic—but I think Laneige wins in this category, given how many varieties the brand has. Laneige has options ranging from fruity, sweet, and minty, and I love that they come out with new fragrances a few times per year, especially during the holidays. My favorite is the lemon scent that was a limited edition release a couple of years ago (I hope they bring it back one day), but to my surprise, I’ve been reaching for their pumpkin lip mask, which came out recently. If you love fun scented lip products, you’ll appreciate the options that Laneige provides.

Value

Winner: Laneige

While I think that the Lawless lip mask is fairly priced, especially considering that it contains Maxi-lip, you get a lot more product for your money with the Laneige option. At $21, the Lawless mask contains just eight milliliters of product, while the Laneige mask costs $24 but contains more than double the amount of product with 21 millimeters.

What You Can Expect to Pay

When shopping for a lip mask, you can expect to pay anywhere from around $10 to around $50. Both the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask and the Lawless Forget The Filler Overnight Lip Plumping Mask are priced between $20 and $25, which seems to be the sweet spot for products in this category. When determining the one for you, consider what benefits you’re looking for and what feel and finish you prefer.
