With Fall just days away, we're prepping our beauty routines for an onslaught of matte base makeup, silvery shadows, and dark, ‘90s-inspired blushes. Although a dewy summer complexion might be going into hibernation during the upcoming cool season, the iconic glazed donut manicure that took the internet by storm is still reigning supreme—this time, in a chocolate flavor. Hailey Bieber, the mascot of the glazed donut trend, recently rocked a brown iteration that she's dubbed the “chocolate glazed donut manicure.”

The Trend

If you haven’t caught a glimpse of the trendy polish look yet, Hailey Bieber first debuted the trend at the 2022 Met Gala, where she paired a pearly nude glazed donut manicure with her all-white Yves Saint Laurent gown and feather-trimmed cape. As we previously reported, the key to locking the pearlescent sheen into this manicure type is by rubbing chrome powder on top of a manicure. The manicure caught on like wildfire, leading people to recreate the manicure in a variety of colors—Bieber herself even rocked a baby pink strawberry glazed donut look.

The trend was fitting for a an ultra-dewy summer, and Bieber proves that it belongs in the fall and winter seasons, too, by adding a chocolate base to the glazed donut. Now, we can recreate the look, as Bieber’s nail artist Zola Ganzorigt just posted a step-by-step guide for creating a moody brown chocolate glazed donut manicure for fall.

The Technique

Although it may seem as though you can just brush a chrome powder on top of any nail polish color to achieve the look, one of the key features of the glazed donut manicure’s mutli-dimensional sheen is using a sheer nail polish. Ganzorigt explains in her strawberry glazed donut tutorial, “if [the] color doesn’t seem sheer as this video, I’d highly recommend [mixing your base color] with clear gel.”

For the chocolate mani, Ganzorigt applys OPI’s Stay Strong Gel Base Coat ($19), then mixes equal parts DND Gel Polishes ($9) in Coffee Bean and Spiced Brown with the OPI Stay Shiny Gel Top Coat ($20) to sheer out the otherwise opaque brown gel polishes. After curing the color under a UV light, Ganzorigt applies a coat of the OPI Stay Shiny Gel Top Coat ($20) and cures the manicure again before dusting the OPI Chrome Effects Powder in Tin Man Can (pro only) for the iconic glazed look.

The result? A chocolatey brown glazed donut manicure that feels cozy, while still carrying on the number one trending manicure style for another season. If a moody, dewy manicure is on your beauty itinerary this fall, don’t stop at brown—a navy blueberry glazed donut or a deep purple plum glazed donut manicure both sound just as scrumptous.
