Parachute Classic Bathrobe

Parachute

What We Like
  • Plush and cozy

  • Very absorbent

  • Light enough for year-round wear

What We Don't Like
  • Prone to pulling and snagging

It's not surprising that there was once a 2,000-person waitlist for this standout staple. Made from 100 percent Turkish cotton, our top choice is plush and cozy, yet light enough that you can wear it year-round, making it an obvious best-seller. Design-wise, it boasts two front pockets for holding your lounging essentials, a waist tie for keeping it nicely wrapped, and a shawl collar.

Byrdie's former senior social media editor Kelly Gallagher is a big fan: "I love everything Parachute, including their robes," she says. "I actually have this robe and the Turkish waffle weave one and switch between the two, depending on the season. This one is definitely heavier, which makes it great for chilly mornings, and the terry material is ideal for using it right out of the shower. Plus, it gets softer and softer with every wash."

What Our Testers Say

"One thing that really stuck out to me about this one was the pockets. I was able to slip my phone into them without worrying about it weighing down the robe and causing unevenness or even causing the robe to fall open, a surprisingly common problem." — Leigh Weingus, Product Tester

Final Verdict

We’ll go ahead and say that you can't go wrong with any of the above robes, but our absolute favorite would have to be the Parachute Classic Bathrobe, which once had a 2,000-person waitlist for good reason. Made from 100 percent Turkish cotton, it’s plush and cozy yet light enough to wear during the summer months. We also think a good robe shouldn’t have to cost a fortune, which is why we’re loving the Amazon Essentials Lightweight Waffle Robe. It’s soft and stretchy, very affordable, and available in a range of sizes to fit most body types. Finally, when we want to be as cozy as possible (when don't we?), we’re looking to the Brooklinen Super-Plush Robe. As the name suggests, it’s super soft but not bulky.

Meet the Expert

Heather Newberger is a fashion stylist and the author of "How to Date Your Wardrobe: And Other Ways to Revive, Revitalize, and Reinvigorate Your Style." Her work (and her expert fashion advice) can be found across various publications, campaigns, and news outlets.

What to Look For in a Robe

A Style and Material That Fits Your Needs

When shopping for a robe, consider your home's climate, your body temperature, and your #GRWM style to help you decide which material (flannel, silk, cotton, linen) is perfect for you.

Sometimes it's easiest to start by listing everything you don't like about your last robe. "Consider what didn’t work about it (Too hot? Too cold? Fabric feel too cheap?) and then get your priorities in order," says fashion stylist and author Heather Newberger. "Are you on the hunt for something sexy and chic, or need a robe purely for coverage? Would you rather don a robe that feels like a big hug or looks expensive?” Ultimately, you’ll want to find one that checks all the boxes.

A Comfortable Fit

It might seem obvious, but the comfort and fit of your robe are also essential factors to keep in mind. A robe should always be comfortable, but you should also consider what fit will be the most practical.

Are you looking to be wrapped in a blanket of softness as you sip tea and watch TV? Opt for a longer, oversized fit, like the Offhours Homecoat. Looking for something you can easily throw on as you make coffee, cook breakfast, and do your makeup in the morning? You’ll be much better off with something like the Amazon Essentials Lightweight Waffle Robe.

Easy to Clean

Robes are just as prone to spills and stains as the rest of our clothing. While you can easily toss a cotton robe, like the Parachute Classic Turkish Cotton Robe, into the washing machine, silkier styles—like the SKIMS Long Stretch Silk Robe—look and feel more elegant but require more upkeep.

Always look at the cleaning instructions before you click add to cart—you'll probably want something machine or hand-washable to avoid running to the dry cleaners over every spilled drop of tea. (Or wine, no judgment.)

FAQ
  • What are the best fabrics for a robe?

Robes are available in countless materials, but Newberger points out that some are better than others, depending on your needs. She breaks down the most popular materials below.

“Linen bathrobes offer unparalleled lightness, but before you purchase one, it’s crucial to consider that it may never return from the laundry the same way,” Newberger says. “It also wrinkles more than any other material on earth, so you’ll likely have to steam or iron it after every wash.” That said, linen is great for summer months or for people who run hot.

“Silk bathrobes, on the other hand, won’t leave you with a ton of maintenance, though you'll want to make sure to invest in one that's pure silk,” advises Newberger. “Silk blends are often mixed with polyester, which traps heat and can quickly make you want to take it off, rather than luxuriate in it."

What about a robe to keep you warm and toasty post-shower or bubble bath? Newberger recommends reaching for classic cotton terry. “More insulating than alluring, I gravitate towards cotton terry for its quick absorbency and because it doesn’t leave any fuzzies on my skin after my post-shower routine,” she says. “Cotton waffle robes are also cozy and leave your skin feeling smooth—however, they’re often much thinner than terry and quickly absorb too much water, leaving you damp.”

A more luxe option is cashmere, which Newberger says isn’t for everyone. “I find cashmere to be a bit prickly on my skin, and with its low absorbency rate, this is a robe that's mostly for show,” she says. That said, cashmere is a solid choice if you're looking to stay warm once you've already dried off.

How We Researched & Tested

To find the best robes, our team of editors, writers, and contributors spent hours researching dozens of brands and styles, adding their personal favorites to the list. We then sent certain top picks to our at-home testers, who wore them for several weeks to evaluate three key attributes—feel, fit, and functionality.

Along with covering beauty, she also covers health, wellness, fashion, and other lifestyle topics. A devoted robe wearer, she has options at the ready for every season. Her favorite move? Putting on a plush and cozy robe instead of drying off with a towel. (Sounds weird, but try it.)
