SYSTANE Gel Drops

Dry, red, and irritated eyes are uncomfortable, and can leave you feeling preoccupied. “More people than ever are suffering from dry, irritated, red eyes that can feel itchy or gritty as if there’s a foreign body in your eyes,” says ophthalmologist Diane Hilal-Campo, MD. Credit not only the obscene amount of time we all spend staring at electronic screens but also the new norm of mask-wearing; masks cause air to flow upward toward the eyes and evaporate tears, exacerbating and even causing dryness, she explains.

Byrdie Researched & Approved

We love SYSTANE's Gel Drops, our best overall pick, for their long-lasting power. Also, the preservative-free Lubricant Eye Drops from Refresh Tears are another great choice that's friendly on the wallet.

Enter the beauty of a good eye drop, which can help ease discomfort instantly. Even though you probably just pop into a drugstore or rummage through your medicine cabinet and grab the first bottle you can find, it’s important to note that not all eye drops are created equal. They rely on different ingredients and can have different functions and mechanisms of action, making it important to choose the right one for you.

We conducted hours of research on the best eye drops, evaluating each on their formula, concerns targeted, and dosage. After considering dozens of options and consulting a board-certified ophthalmologist, we landed on the following best in show.

These lubricating drops (which are a favorite of Drew Barrymore, who sang their praises on Instagram) feel as natural as your tears. Per the name, the texture is on the thicker side, more gel- than liquid-like, making it a great option if you want to ensure long-lasting moisture and minimize how often you need to use it throughout the day. In related news, they’re also great to use pre-bedtime to keep your eyes lubricated overnight.

Meet the Expert

Dr. Diane Hilal-Campo is a board-certified ophthalmologist in Oakland, New Jersey. She is renowned for her expertise in correcting a wide range of disorders of the eye, both medically and surgically.

What to Look for in Eye Drops for Dry Eyes

Preservative-Free

According to Dr. Hilal-Campo, preservative-free drops, often marketed as preservative-free tears, are the best over-the-counter drops for dry eyes, given that preservatives can be irritating and exacerbate dryness for many.

Active Ingredients

Common ingredients used in these types of drops include carboxymethylcellulose, glycerin, polyethylene glycol, and propylene glycol. It is possible to have an allergic reaction to these, which is why it’s important to know which one you’re using. “It often requires some trial-and-error to find a product that’s best for you,” points out Dr. Hilal-Campo.

FAQ
  • How often should you use eye drops for dry eyes?

Dr. Hilal-Campo says that you should never use eye drops for dry eyes more than four times a day. “They have preservatives in them that are toxic to the cornea and conjunctival epithelium when used more frequently,” she says. However, she notes that preservative-free formulas can be used as frequently as needed. “But, if they’re being used more than four times a day, you should consider going to your eye care professional to get a prescription medication,” she adds.

  • How many drops should you put into dry eyes?

How many drops should be inserted per dose will depend on each individual formula and what their directions indicate. According to Dr. Hilal-Campo, one drop per eye is typically considered a full dose, however, some formulas may indicate inserting up to three drops at a time.

  • Can you use eye drops everyday?

Although you can use eye drops for dry eyes up to four times per day, long time use without the care of an ophthalmologist is not recommended.
